Sir John was knighted in 1445 while serving as a King's Sergeant at Arms. He served as a
Justice for Kent between 1447 and 1460; Knight of Shire in 1449; Sheriff in 1454 and Victualler
of Calais. He fought on the Lancastrian side during the early battles of the Wars of Roses.
These wars were an internal dispute over the hereditary right to the throne which occurred
during the last half of the 15th century. Two of King Edward III's sons; Edmund, Duke of York
and John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and their descendents, each believed that a member of
their group should be King. Sir john Cheney was pardoned by Edmund's descendents King Edward IV in 1462 for his role in supporting the Lancastrian cause. Sir John de Cheney married Eleanor Shottesbroke, a member of a Berkshire family. They had eight sons including William, John, Edward, Robert, Roger and three others whose names are unknown. Some of their children migrated from Kent to properties of their mother's family in Berkshire. |
