Notes for Robert de Cheney

General Note
Sir Robert de Cheney of Shurland inherited the family estates after his older Brother William was killed in battle against the Scots at Halidon Hill in 1333. Sir Robert went to France in 1346 with Edward III and the Black Prince where he fought in the King's division at Crecy, and later at Calais. Calais remained under English control for two centuries during which it served as a base for operations against the French. Sir Robert reverted to the ancient Cheney coat of "Ermine on a bend Sable three Marlet Or" for arms. He also bore the arms of his mother's family, the Shurland's as did his descendants for several generations. He was Knight of Shire for Kent between 1348 and 1357 and for Wiltshire in 1358. He left two sons, Richard and Roger.
