X Abraham born 1799 in 1829 census, Ontario,Co., Canandaigua p 208 This is not totally proven, but with research into the Abraham Garrison's in New York it appears to be the family. -------------------------------- Abraham Garrison Biographical Notes 23 Sep 2006 by Mike Tunison Abraham Garrison was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1760, in Franklin, Bergen County, New Jersey. Evidence strongly suggests that he may be a grandson of Abraham Gerritse and Rachel Hesselse of Bergen County, New Jersey, who were married on May 14, 1718/19 in Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. The family lived in the New York City region. Abraham Garrison married Jane Francisco about 1784 in the Town of Pittstown, Albany County, New York. She was the daughter of Johnannis Francisco and Aaltje Doremus. She was also the sister of Levi and John Francisco, Revolutionary War Patriots, who are being honored here today. Abraham and Jane (Francisco) Garrison had nine children, including my ancestor, Jane, who was born about January 8, 1789, and died February 27, 1826. Jane married Christian Fisher, the son of Revolutionary War Patriot Johann Adam Fisher. During the Revolutionary War, Abraham Garrison served in the 14th Regiment, Albany County, New York Militia. In his Application for Pension, dated August 17, 1832, he stated that he enlisted in May or June 1780 (when he was 19 years old) for nine months as a private, and immediately proceeded to Saratoga, New York, where he spent the entire enlistment. He was attached to Captain Silas Gray'' Company in Colonel John McKinstry's Regiment. At that point in time, American troops were patrolling the still key area of the Battle of Saratoga, which took place during September and October 1777. Upon expiration of his term, he immediately re-enlisted for the duration of the war in the same company and regiment. In the spring of 1781, he marched with his company to Fort Edward, and remained there for a few days before returning to Saratoga until intelligence of peace was received. His pension application states that after the war, he returned to Pittstown, and later moved to Gorham, Ontario County, New York, around 1806. Abraham Garrison is noted in Conover's "History of Ontario County" as one of the earliest settlers in the Gorham area. He was a farmer by occupation. He died in Yates County, New York, on August 11, 1833, probably at the home of his daughter, Alida Pearce. His age at death was 72 years, 7 months, and 17 days. Three of his children had pre-deceased him. The unmarked grave next to Abraham's wife, Jane (Francisco) Garrison, in Lord Cemetery, Town of Gorham, Ontario County, New York, is generally considered to be that of Abraham Garrison. In Abraham's Letters of Administration, his son, Hassel A. Garrison, petitioned the Surrogate Court and stated that his father had died "very suddenly", and left no will and testament. In Hassel's opinion, the whole of Abraham's personal property did not amount to more than two hundred dollars. --- Following the services, a luncheon was held at the little church in the village where these patriots were members, Mike told the following family story which has been handed down: 1806 - Family lore from Marg Foster: Christian married Jane Garrison in 1806. Not long after, Christian and his brother, Gilbert, went to the acreage which Christian had purchased, east of Canandaigua Lake, in the wilderness, and built a three-sided cabin and proceeded to hew out a farm (which remained in the family for over 100 years). Jane became impatient so, with her father-in-law's help {Adam}, took all her belongings (about 20 miles) to her husband's "cabin". This precipitated the completion of the cabin and it was soon made suitable and weather-tight for occupancy. It isn't recorded how long the family lived in this cabin. It was still standing, unoccupied, when my aunt was a little girl (1890's). Christian had one of the finest wheat farms in the area (300 ac.). |
