Gustaf Alfrid /Uppfalt/ From Birth cerificate his name should read Gustaf Alfred Peterson. Our records show August for a middle name. He came to America on May 18,1866. Changed to name to Uppfalt which means" up on slope or hill and Falt means a field". Died at his son's Home of a stroke. Listed In citizenship paper as Gustus A. Uppfalt. Lists the Sovereign of Sweden as origin. A witness was John Uppfalt, which indicates there were other family members living in Henry Co,IL. Now it appears the whole family may have immigrated from Sweden, as NE census shows other family member. (1885). Marriage license, family records. Age of Gustus and Helena states different birth date on 1880 census. Two stories area told about a name change when leaving Sweden. One says there had been "son" on the end of the name and when they were coming to this country the King gave permission to change there family name to " Uppfalt" taken partly from the town "Upplace". #2 Their name was Peterson and changed it when coming to America. Sarah Helena didn't want the same name when she married. They took the name "Uppfatl" after the township Gustus was born. Also, there was a story that he was a guard for the King, when they took the name change. Sophie Helena died very young leaving her children to be raised by their father. Gustus and Helena were both born in Sweden, but married in Henry CO, IL. Could have met on the boat. Don't know if she was called Sophie or Helene. She was a deep student of the bible. This is on the back of a picture of her that Addie said she had, but haven't been able to find hte picture. |
