John /Wickwire/ John apparently brought his family to St Lawrence County, NY in 1830. St Lawrence County in the farthest north county in upstate New York. It appears that he and his family settled sooner or later in Oswegatchie. This is a very small town established in 1801, immediately south of Ogdensburg, which is on the St Lawrence River and the US Border with Canada. Oswegatchie is the Indian word for "black water". There is a "Black Lake" in Oswegatchie. This is where John died in 1875. It seems possible that John did a lot of border hopping during his lifetime. The first source of confusion is his birthplace. Was it really Albany, New York on 3 May 1801, or was it in Canada? He was in the middle of 10 children, and all the others that we know of were born in Canada. His children sometimes said their father was born in NY and sometimes said he was born in Canada. His first three children - Ellen, Timothy and William (pre-1830) were born in Canada - probably Augusta, Grenville, Ontario. This is literally right across the river from Ogdensburg, NY. Of course, there was no bridge back then, but there were only a few miles "as the crow flies" between Augusta and Oswegatchie. There is (probably - the handwriting is poor) a J Wickware? in Oswegatchie in 1840 (page28). There are 5 young boys (know of 4) and 2 girls. This is too much to be a coincidence. His brothers and sisters seemed to freely inter-change the spelling between Wickwire and Wickware. John's children do this as well. John does not show up in the U S Census of 1850. Either the Census taker completely missed John and his brood, or the page is lost, or they all went back to Canada. However, John and most of his children do show in the 1860 Census and thereafter for many decades. In 1860 and 1870, John was living with his unmarried daughter Mariah. This is probably Maria, the sister living with William Wickwire in Climax, Kalamazoo, MI in 1894. |
